Cataracts and Lens Implants

Cataract surgery replaces a cloudy lens in the eye with an artificial one. It can be carried out on one or both eyes.

What is a Cataract?

As we age, certain vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism become more common due to irregularities in the cornea. However, another condition that gradually develops over time is cataracts. A cataract is characterised by a “clouding” of the eye’s natural lens, leading to blurred or defocused vision. At Akshay Eye Clinic, we specialise in cataract surgery, a highly successful procedure that can significantly improve your vision and quality of life.

What are Symptoms of Cataract?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, it’s crucial to schedule a comprehensive eye examination at our clinic promptly:

1. Blurred or cloudy vision: Objects appear hazy, as if you’re looking through wax paper or cloudy cellophane.

2. Faded colours: Your ability to perceive colours may diminish, making them appear dull or muted.

3. Glare and halos: Light sources such as headlights or streetlights may cause excessive glare or halos, and sunlight might seem overly bright.

4. Poor night vision: Difficulty seeing in low-light conditions, particularly at night.

5. Double or multiple vision: You may see overlapping or multiple images in one eye, which can improve as the cataract progresses.

6. Frequent prescription changes: If you frequently require changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses, it could be a sign of cataract development.

Restoring Clear Vision through Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is known for its high success rate, with over 90% of patients experiencing improved vision after the procedure. Many individuals notice immediate vision improvement, allowing them to resume their regular activities within hours. Some even find that their vision becomes better than ever, while others may still require glasses for certain tasks, such as reading (known as Presbyopia) and other near activities.
During the initial healing period, there may be some restrictions on strenuous activities, but most people can quickly return to their daily lives. What’s more, they are often surprised to discover that activities previously hindered by cataracts, such as reading and socialising, become enjoyable again. While no surgery is entirely risk-free, we take every precaution to minimise complications. We encourage you to ask us any questions you may have during your consultation at Akshay Eye Clinic.

 The Procedure

Cataract surgery is a common procedure, with over three million surgeries performed each year. It is considered one of the safest and most effective medical interventions available. The virtually painless surgery typically lasts between 15 to 30 minutes. Our experienced surgeons make a small incision at or near the cornea, removing the cloudy or inflexible lens. In its place, we insert an intraocular lens (IOL) for permanent vision correction. At Akshay Eye Clinic, we specialise in the most advanced technique called phacoemulsification, which eliminates the need for needles or stitches.
With phacoemulsification, the affected lens is efficiently removed, and the IOL is inserted, allowing for rapid healing and clear vision restoration. More than 97% of our patients experience no complications with this advanced procedure. Most individuals can resume their regular activities the following day. It’s important to note that cataracts do not need to be fully matured (“ripe”) before removal. If cataracts impede your ability to enjoy life’s activities, it may be time to consider surgery.

Lens Implants for Enhanced Vision

In the past, cataract treatment involved removing the clouded lens and relying on thick glasses for vision correction, which often required additional reading glasses for presbyopia. However, thanks to remarkable advancements in intraocular lens (IOL) technology, you can now achieve excellent vision quality without the need for glasses. An IOL is an implanted synthetic lens that replaces your eye’s natural lens.
Depending on the type of IOL selected, you can correct existing refractive errors such as nearsightedness or farsightedness. Additionally, if desired, laser vision correction can further improve your vision after receiving an IOL. At Akshay Eye Clinic, we offer different types of lifestyle IOLs, each with unique benefits.

Monofocal IOL

The Standard Choice

Monofocal IOLs are the conventional type of lifestyle IOLs. They provide excellent vision correction for one distance, typically far vision. However, some patients, with their doctor’s recommendation, may opt to correct for near vision as well. If corrected for far vision, reading glasses may still be necessary. Patients with astigmatism might require glasses to enhance their distance vision.

Multifocal IOL

Vision Correction at All Distances

Multifocal IOLs offer vision correction at various distances, reducing or eliminating the need for reading glasses. While they are slightly more expensive and may not be fully covered by insurance, many patients prefer them for the freedom they provide. With a multifocal IOL, you can enjoy clearer vision for activities at any distance.
